How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

Peaceful newborn baby asleep in soft wrap during Hartlepool photography session

So you've booked your newborn photography session – congratulations! That means you're about to create some beautiful memories of your little one. But now you're probably wondering: how do I actually prepare for this?

Don't worry. I've got you covered. Here's everything you need to know to get ready for your newborn session at SP Photography in Hartlepool.

When Should I Book?

The ideal time for newborn photos is between 7 and 14 days after birth. Babies this age are usually super sleepy, curl up beautifully, and haven't started fighting sleep yet. That said, we happily welcome babies up to 12 weeks – every stage has its own magic.

Book early if you can, ideally during pregnancy. Sessions fill up fast!

How to Prepare Your Baby

  • Keep baby awake before the session – a tired baby sleeps deeper during photos
  • Feed baby just before arriving – a full baby is a happy baby
  • Don't use new creams or lotions – we want that natural baby skin
  • Dress baby in easy-to-remove clothes – buttons and zips waste precious time

What Should We Wear?

For parents, stick to neutral tones – whites, creams, soft pastels. Avoid bold patterns or bright colours that distract from your baby.

For baby, I'll provide wraps and outfits from my collection. You really don't need to worry about this part – I've got plenty of lovely options.

What to Bring

  • Pacifier (if you use one)
  • Milk – bottle or ready-to-feed
  • Nappies and wipes
  • A comfort item for you – the session can be a couple of hours

What to Expect on the Day

My Hartlepool studio is warm, cozy, and designed specifically for newborns. The session is completely relaxed – we take things at baby's pace.

There'll be time for feeds, changes, and cuddles. I never rush little ones. The best photos happen when everyone is calm and happy.

You'll be with your baby the whole time. No strange environments or scary equipment – just a comfortable space where you can relax too.

How Long Does It Take?

Plan for 2 to 3 hours. This sounds long, but it flies by. We break for feeds, and some babies need extra time to settle. Plenty of time means no pressure – we get the shots no matter what.

About SP Photography

I'm based in Hartlepool and have been photographing newborns for years. My approach is simple: gentle, patient, and focused on capturing your baby exactly as they are – tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, and all.

Safety is paramount. Every pose I create has been tried and tested. Your baby's comfort comes first, always.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my baby won't settle?

No problem at all. We stop, try again, or simply capture what we can. Babies are unpredictable – that's part of the journey.

Can siblings be in the photos?

Absolutely. Family shots are included, and I love capturing sibling moments. Just bring them along – we'll work them in when they're happy.

When will I get my photos?

You'll receive your online gallery within 2 weeks. From there, you can download your images and order prints.

What if I want digital images?

The session fee includes one print. You can upgrade to Bronze, Silver, or Gold packages for more digital images. Just ask when booking or on the day.
